Life exists all over the Earth in air, water, and soil, with many ecosystems forming the biosphere. Some of these are harsh environments occupied only by extremophiles. The life in a particular ecosystem is called its biota.
Explore the scientific quest to define life, from its fundamental characteristics and origins to its vast diversity and the search for it beyond Earth. All living organisms (biotic) share eight key characteristics or functions: order, sensitivity or response to stimuli, reproduction, growth and development, regulation and homeostasis, energy processing, adaptation, and evolution.
