Life exists all over the Earth in air, water, and soil, with many ecosystems forming the biosphere. Some of these are harsh environments occupied only by extremophiles. All living organisms (biotic) share eight key characteristics or functions: order, sensitivity or response to stimuli, reproduction, growth and development, regulation and homeostasis, energy processing, adaptation, and evolution. When viewed together, these characteristics serve to define life. LIFE was there in 1948 when Hollywood took its first stab at making a mermaid look real. A difficult term to define, life can be considered the characteristic state of living organisms and individual cells, or that quality or property that distinguishes living organisms from dead organisms and inanimate objects. NASA defines life as a self-sustaining chemical system capable of biological evolution. A key part of any definition of life is that living organisms reproduce. Let’s now add a couple of observations: Reproduction is a mostly accurate but imperfect process.
