M13 is one of the brightest star clusters in the northern sky. It’s full of remarkable individual stars. But when those stars come together, they create something that’s truly greater than the sum of its parts. That’s the M13 advantage. Like shiny flakes sparkling in a snow globe, over 100,000 stars whirl within the globular cluster M13, one of the brightest star clusters visible from the Northern Hemisphere. Now that we have M13 in our telescope, let’s look for an oddity unique to this globular cluster. Look for what appears to be three dark lanes that form the shape of an airplane propeller. The cluster, also known as M13 as it was the 13th entry on 18th-century comet hunter Charles Messier’s list of non-comets, is a grand example of a globular cluster, a dense, gravitationally bound group of stars that can have over a million members.
